berlin museum

Across from Museum Island, the historic architectural center of Berlin, Germany, the proposal was to build an echo, a broken reflection of monuments. In contrast to the historic buildings on the island that are solidly embedded in the earth, the design proposed a new museum with a fragmented stone skin interlaced with light that hovers above the ground.

The veil of stone permits indirect, natural light to illuminate the exhibition spaces. Supported by the steel frame, the walls are composed of pieces of limestone, each with a broken edge and a textured, irregular surface.
